He photographed the "shock and awe" bombing of Baghdad, watched Iraqi families flee their homes and witnessed blasts which killed US soldiers on patrol.
Now, to mark 10 years since the start of the Iraq War, some of Sean Smith's most powerful pictures are going on display.
His images, taken for the UK's Guardian newspaper, are being shown at Imperial War Museum North in Greater Manchester.
